What is barefoot trimming?
On a basic level what I do is file and trim the hoof but really what a natural trim does is at once complicated yet simple. It is about balancing the hoof to the inner structures of the foot. Making sure that we respect the live sole plane and allow the horse to have a ground parallel coffin bone upon landing. It means making sure that the horse has adequate sole depth to allow a comfortable heel first landing, a well developed back of the foot including strong lateral cartilages and digital cushion as well as a correct break over to prevent strain on the hoof wall connection.
It involves managing diet and excercise to facilitate the horse developing all of these things and is about providing protection in the from of hoof boots or casting while a horse is healing and recovering form any damage he may have due to prior improper hoof care and shoeing.
